Can Your HVAC Handle the Heat? 7 Signs Your System Needs Service
The onset of warmer weather means that, for a vast majority of Americans, air conditioning becomes more than a luxury— but a necessity. In fact, survey findings from the Energy Information Administration revealed that 88% of U.S. households were using air conditioning in 2020. Of that percentage, two-thirds reported relying on central AC or a central heat pump as their main source of air conditioning.
As temperatures begin to rise through the spring and into summer, your system — no matter how reliable — may be in need of a little TLC.
So, how can you tell if your air conditioner can handle the heat this season?
The United States Department of Energy (DOE) suggests that regular maintenance of your system’s filters, coils, fins, and refrigerant lines can be the most effective way to ensure that your home remains efficient, safe, and cool.
However, homeowners should also be on the lookout for the following warning signs that your air conditioner requires extra service.
1. You Detect Warm Air Being Blown
There are a couple of different things to troubleshoot if you notice your system blowing warm air instead of cool. Possible causes might include dirty filters, refrigerant leaks, or obstructions on the outdoor unit such as debris.
2. The Airflow Seems Weak
Does the breeze feel weak coming out of your vents? This could be another indication that your system needs attention.
3. There Are Hot & Cold Spots Throughout the House
If you’re noticing that some rooms in your home are significantly cooler — or hotter — than others, your system may be pointing to a bigger problem.
4. It’s Constantly Turning Off & On
Your system can experience extra strain (which may affect your energy bills over time) if it’s cycling between start and stop. If this is the case, the DOE suggests that something might be up with the electrical connections — which might warrant a professional service call.
5. Your Energy Bills Have Increased (Out of Nowhere)
A telltale sign that your system is not as efficient as it once was? Your energy bills have spiked without significant change in usage or other known factors.
6. A Humid Household Environment
Ideally, your system is supposed to be regulating humidity levels – not causing them. It might be worth checking the condensate drain, according to the DOE, to ensure proper drainage.
7. You Can’t Recall The Last Time It Was Serviced
If you don’t remember the last time you called your preferred HVAC contractor for a tune-up, it’s probably time you set a time on the calendar!
